Dear TfL,
Re: NMR/REGULATION/STOT/BS/TRO, GLA/2025/0118
A1400 Woodford Avenue
I am writing to formally object to the proposal for implementing a bus lane on Woodford Avenue, which would operate from 7 AM to 10 AM and 4 PM to 7 PM, Monday through Friday.
Reasons for Objection:
1. Since the introduction of a 24/7 bus lane in March 2024 on the stretch of Woodford Avenue between Keswick Gardens and south of Clayhall Avenue, we have experienced significant congestion at the Clayhall junction traffic lights. This congestion extends all the way to the Gants Hill roundabout. The primary issue arises from vehicles wishing to turn right into Clayhall Avenue, which block the right lane due to the limited capacity of the traffic lights. This blockage results in heavy traffic delays, significantly affecting side roads leading into Woodford Avenue
2. During off peak times when traffic has eased, it has become very dangerous when turning left into Lord Avenue, as we have witnessed near misses that could have lead to serious accidents including Fatalities. When turning to Lord Avenue you have to slow down or suddenly stop due to the bus lane on a 40mph moving cars & traffic . It leads to halt of moving traffic leading to unnecessary congestion, delays on Woodford Avenue. We the Residents have never experienced any congestion or delays on the proposed bus lanes on Woodford Avenue before
3. These are roads with high footfall of children and young adults walking to multiple nearby schools. Idle traffic and harsh turnings along these roads cause significant concerns around air quality and safety of pedestrians who often walk into the road whilst trying to cross and navigate impatient drivers
4. Redbridge Councils imminent plans to introduce three ‘School Streets’ schemes alongside multiple Woodford Avenue side roads and adjacent roads, despite local objection, will further impact congestion, air quality and safety in these areas, creating a bottle neck of traffic stuck between the bus lanes and ‘School Streets’ enforcement areas
5. The 24/7 bus lane in the southwestbound direction has also caused traffic congestion, reaching as far as Charlie Brown’s roundabout. This situation has a knock-on effect on major surrounding roads, such as Chigwell Road and Hermon Hill, particularly during evening peak hours
6. If the proposed peak hour bus lane is implemented, residents of the IG4 and IG5 postcodes will be adversely affected during the morning and evening hours, which are crucial times for commuters preparing for work
As Transport for London (TfL) has committed to delivering 25 kilometers of new bus lanes as part of their bus priority schemes by March 2025, we local residents believe that the stretch of Woodford Avenue does not warrant the introduction of bus lanes, as there are currently no physical obstructions (such as parking bays or pinch points) impacting bus movement. We also request that TfL provide data from their iBus system to demonstrate any delays experienced by buses on this stretch of Woodford Avenue alongside data collected regarding air quality on the Woodford Avenue during the inital trial of the bus lanes in 2024
7. Furthermore, given that Woodford Avenue is a 40 mph road, it is difficult for drivers to accurately judge the speed of oncoming vehicles when changing lanes at the last minute. Since the introduction of the 24/7 bus lanes in March / April 2024, residents have witnessed at least five serious collisions in this area, particularly at the Clayhall Avenue traffic lights. These are roads with high footfalls of pedestrians walking alongside and crossing the Woodford Avenue
Therefore, we, the residents, object to the entire proposal for the peak hour bus lane on Woodford Avenue and request that TfL remove the existing bus lane road markings and signs completely from this stretch of road.
Yours Sincerely
